Dr. Doolitle of the pet world wants to Luv Ur Pet
By Dennis Kaiser
Ilene Robbins says she has never met a pet that didn't like her.
"I'm kind of the Dr. Doolittle of pets," she says. "Animals have a sense about people that is incredible. They are excellent judges of character...the animals I've met love me."
Robbins says that even pets who normally draw away from other visitors warm up to her easily.
Robbins decided to parlay her love of animals into a career by starting Luv Ur Pets.
"I really believe that this is what I am meant to do" she says. "And I love what I do."
What Robbins does is take care of people's pets when they go on vacation or for other reasons that they can't give their pet the attention it needs. For example, some of her dog owning clients find their schedules have them working late and they are too tired to walk their dogs when they come home. Robbins visits the dogs, feeds them, takes them on walks and generally tries to see that they get the amount of exercise and companionship.
"The pets feel more comfortable this way," Robbins said. "I don't think animals should be kept in cages 24 hours a day."
Keeping animals out of cages will keep them not only happy, but also healthy, Robbins said.
"When they are caged, animals tend to get depressed," she says. "Then they also tend to pick up germs and become sick easier."
Robbins said her unique love of animals began when she was a little girl and she had her first dog, a chihuahua and fox terrier mix she called "Princess."
In fact, Robbins said her bond and love with Princess has reached supernatural levels.
"I have her reincarnated in the dog I have now (a
shelty named Precious)," Robbins said. "They have the exact temperament and the same marking on their forehead."
Precious was an abused dog that Robbins acquired from an animal shelter.
"When I first got her she would run and hide when anyone came to the door," she says. "Now she's a friendly dog that all the children on my block call "Lassie."
Robbins said she gave up her career in the business world where she worked in marketing to follow her dream of running Luv Ur Pets so she could surround herself with four-footed friends.
"My ultimate goal is to have a facility that could do rescue work as well as caring for pets," she said.
While Robbins said she prefers dogs to other animals, she is experienced in handling all types of creatures.
"I had one client with a golden retriever and three reptiles, two were vegetarians and the third ate live mice." she said. "I told them I would love their dog, but I won't love their reptiles. I'll take care of them, but I won't love them."
Excluding reptiles, however, Robbins said she loves all pets.
"They are being used for therapy with older people and even abused children to great success," she says. "We've only scratched the surface of the value of pets."
